Another year, another South Orkney ecosystem survey done!
Another year, another South Orkney ecosystem survey done! We had a fair bit of rough weather this time, but managed to complete our program and even see a bit of wildlife during the single calm day. Krill abundance was the second highest we have recorded since 2011 and fin and humpback whale abundance was remarkably high again. With this year’s data, fin whale abundance around the South Orkneys shows a significant increase over the last 12y (paper to come out soon). We re-deployed current meters, echosounder and sound recorders to monitor what is going on in the time between the surveys.
